Combined Convection and Radiation ThermoFlux – 7073

Category: Thermodynamics Lab Equipment  ·  Country of Origin: India

Product Overview

Combined Convection and Radiation ThermoFlux – 7073 is a small-scale laboratory accessory for the study of combined convection and radiation heat transfer from a horizontal heated cylinder under free and forced convection conditions. The unit comprises a rod heater (100 W at 24 V DC, 10 mm diameter, 70 to 80 mm length) mounted in a vertical air duct with a variable-speed centrifugal fan. The cylinder surface is coated with heat-resistant paint at emissivity close to unity. Air velocity is adjustable up to 15 m/s via the blower, or electronically over 0 to 10 m/s on the computer-controlled version. Two K-type thermocouples measure surface temperature at the cylinder mid position and upstream ambient air temperature. An anemometer in the outlet duct measures air velocity. Measurements enable determination of convective heat transfer coefficient hc and radiant heat transfer hr at varyi…

Construction and Design

The Combined Convection and Radiation ThermoFlux – 7073 is built around a vertical air duct with a centrifugal fan at the base and a heated cylinder positioned at the top of the duct.

The heated cylinder uses a rod heater rated at 100 W at 24 V DC, with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 70 to 80 mm. The cylinder surface is coated with heat-resistant paint providing a consistent emissivity close to unity. The mounting arrangement is designed to minimise conductive heat loss to the duct wall, isolating the combined convection and radiation losses as the primary heat transfer paths under measurement.

A manually adjustable throttle plate varies air velocity through the duct. On the computer-controlled version, the variable-speed fan adjusts air flow electronically over the range 0 to 10 m/s. The air blower delivers velocities up to 15 m/s.

A K-type thermocouple attached at the mid position of the cylinder wall measures surface temperature under all operating conditions. A second K-type thermocouple in the outlet duct records the upstream ambient air temperature. An anemometer in the fan outlet duct measures air velocity. All sensor signals are available for optional PC-based data acquisition via the LabVIEW DAQ software package.

Software (Optional): ThermoFlux – 7073

DAQ software is specially designed in the National Instruments LabVIEW environment to measure and calculate results from the apparatus. The software is optional. When software is used, a set of electronic sensors is included. The software is compatible with any Windows environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What heat transfer modes can be studied using the Combined Convection and Radiation ThermoFlux – 7073?
A: The unit allows study of combined convection and radiation from a horizontal heated cylinder. Both free convection and forced convection modes are supported, and the dominance of convection at low surface temperatures versus radiation at high surface temperatures can be demonstrated.

Q: What is the air velocity range available on this apparatus?
A: The air blower delivers velocities up to 15 m/s. On the computer-controlled unit, air flow is electronically adjustable over 0 to 10 m/s. A manually adjustable throttle plate is also provided for manual control.

Q: How is the surface temperature of the cylinder measured?
A: A K-type thermocouple attached to the wall of the cylinder at the mid position measures the surface temperature under varying operating conditions.

Q: What is the heater specification for the heated cylinder?
A: The heater is a rod heater rated at 100 W at 24 V DC. The cylinder has a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 70 to 80 mm. The surface is coated with heat-resistant paint providing an emissivity close to unity.

Q: Is PC-based data acquisition available for this unit?
A: Yes, as an optional accessory. An optional DAQ software package developed in the National Instruments LabVIEW environment enables PC-based data acquisition. The software is compatible with any Windows environment and is supplied with a set of electronic sensors.
