Construction and Design

The Whirling of Shaft System - Vibrano X - 04 is built around a set of rotor shafts of varying lengths and diameters. Each shaft is mounted between a center support and an end support. The shaft is coupled to a drive motor through an elastic coupling, which allows free movement of the rotor. Self aligning bearings support the shaft and permit speed variation for vibration testing. Adapters fitted in the bearings compensate for differences in shaft diameter. Catch bearings are used to limit the amplitude of oscillation during testing. A mass disc can be fitted to the shaft to assemble a Laval rotor with discrete mass distribution. This Whirling of Shaft System uses thin, elastic rotor shafts made of high strength steel to make oscillatory behavior easy to observe.
