Why an ITI equipment list has to be built trade by trade
An engineering college buys by department. An Industrial Training Institute buys by trade. That single difference changes the whole shape of the purchase file, and it is the reason generic “lab equipment list” documents are close to useless when you are setting up or re-equipping an ITI.
Every trade under the Directorate General of Training has its own syllabus, its own practical exercises, and its own equipment schedule. A Fitter workshop and a Turner workshop sit side by side, share a floor, and share almost nothing else in the bill of quantities. So the procurement file is not one list. It is a stack of lists, one per trade, plus a shared services layer for power, compressed air, extraction, storage and safety.
The other structural difference is quantity. In a degree lab, one universal testing machine serves a batch of sixty because the exercise is a demonstration followed by a group reading. In an ITI, the trainee is being certified on a skill, which means the trainee has to hold the tool. Bench vices, files, try squares, steel rules, screwdrivers and soldering irons are per-head items, not per-lab items. This is where most first-time ITI budgets break: the capital equipment is priced properly and the hand tool and consumable line is underestimated by a wide margin.
What makes an NCVT workshop fit-out different from a college lab
Affiliation under the National Council for Vocational Training, administered through DGT and the state directorates, is granted against a specific trade and a specific number of units. The inspection is not looking at whether the institute owns impressive machines. It is looking at whether every trainee in the sanctioned unit can complete the syllabus practicals in the scheduled hours.
In practice that means three things drive the assessment: the equipment schedule for that trade, the workshop space and services around it, and the maintenance state of what is installed. A machine under a tarpaulin with a missing chuck key counts for nothing.
Do not lift affiliation numbers from a blog, including this one. Trade-wise equipment schedules, unit sizes, space requirements and instructor norms are published by DGT and revised periodically, and state directorates add their own conditions. Download the current syllabus and equipment list for each trade you are applying for, from the official DGT source, and build the BOQ against that document. Everything below is a planning framework to help you read that document faster, not a substitute for it.
The other habit worth borrowing from higher education is documentation discipline. ITIs are inspected less forensically than institutions preparing an NBA accreditation lab documentation file or a NAAC lab equipment documentation submission, but the same evidence set wins arguments: purchase orders, invoices, installation reports, calibration certificates where applicable, stock registers and a dated equipment photograph log.
How to read the quantity column in the tables below
A standard ITI unit is much smaller than a degree class. The tables use a 60-trainee intake because that is how most institutes plan a floor, and because a 60-head intake in a trade normally runs as multiple units sharing one workshop across shifts or batches.
Read the quantities as a planning estimate for a 60-trainee intake, not as a regulatory norm. Machine tool quantities assume batch rotation on the shop floor. Hand tool and measuring instrument quantities assume individual issue, because that is the only way the practical hours actually work. Confirm every number against the current DGT trade equipment schedule before it goes into a tender.
Fitter
Fitter is the highest-volume trade in the ITI system and the one where the per-trainee tool count matters most. The whole first year is bench work.
| Equipment | What it demonstrates | Standard or method where confident | Qty for a 60-student batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitting bench with parallel jaw vice, four stations per bench | Filing, chipping, sawing, marking to a datum | Per DGT trade practical schedule | 15 benches, 60 vices |
| Marking off table with surface plate and angle plate | Layout, scribing, squareness reference | The relevant IS code for surface plate grades | 2 sets |
| Hand tool kit: files, hacksaw frame, hammers, chisels, punches, scriber, try square, steel rule | Core bench fitting skills | Trade syllabus tool list | 60 individual kits |
| Precision measuring set: outside and inside micrometer, vernier caliper, vernier height gauge, dial indicator with stand | Dimensional measurement, tolerance and fit | The relevant IS code for each instrument class | 20 sets, plus 60 verniers |
| Bench drilling machine and pillar drilling machine | Drilling, reaming, counterboring, tapping setups | Machine maker specification | 4 to 6 units |
| Slip gauge set, plug and ring gauges, feeler gauges | Limits, fits, go and no-go inspection | The relevant IS code for gauge grades | 4 sets shared |
| Pedestal grinder and tool grinder | Chisel and drill point grinding | Machine maker specification | 2 units |
The mistake I see most often in Fitter BOQs is buying two beautiful digital micrometers and sixty cheap vernier calipers that lose their zero in a term. Reverse that thinking. Buy fewer premium showpieces and more mid-grade instruments that survive daily issue and return.
Turner
| Equipment | What it demonstrates | Standard or method where confident | Qty for a 60-student batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centre lathe, 1000 mm to 1500 mm between centres, with three and four jaw chucks | Turning, facing, parting, taper turning, screw cutting | Machine maker specification | 12 to 15 machines |
| Lathe accessory set: steady rest, follower rest, faceplate, mandrels, taper turning attachment | Long shaft and eccentric work holding | Machine maker specification | 1 set per machine group |
| Tool holder and HSS or carbide tool bit set | Tool geometry, rake, clearance, tool grinding | The relevant IS code for tool bit sizes | 60 sets |
| Thread gauges, screw pitch gauge, thread micrometer | Thread form and pitch verification | The relevant IS code | 15 sets |
| Tool and cutter grinder | Regrinding single point tools | Machine maker specification | 1 to 2 units |
| Surface roughness comparison specimens | Finish assessment against feed and speed | The relevant IS code for roughness grades | 4 sets |
Machinist
| Equipment | What it demonstrates | Standard or method where confident | Qty for a 60-student batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal milling machine with dividing head | Indexing, gear cutting, keyway milling | Machine maker specification | 4 to 6 units |
| Shaping machine | Flat surface generation, slotting, dovetail cutting | Machine maker specification | 3 to 4 units |
| Surface grinding machine | Precision flat finishing, wheel dressing | Machine maker specification | 2 units |
| Cylindrical grinding machine | Ground diameters and shoulders | Machine maker specification | 1 unit |
| Milling cutter set, arbors, collets, machine vice, clamping set | Work holding and cutter selection | Machine maker specification | 1 set per machine |
| CNC turning and milling trainer with simulation software | Part programming, tool offsets, simulated cycles | Controller documentation | 1 to 2 trainers plus a workstation room |
If budget forces a choice, a simulation-first CNC approach with one real trainer beats two under-utilised machines that nobody is trained to reset. Programming hours are the bottleneck, not spindle hours.
Welder
| Equipment | What it demonstrates | Standard or method where confident | Qty for a 60-student batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arc welding transformer or inverter set with booth | SMAW in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions | Per DGT trade practical schedule | 20 to 25 booths |
| MIG and MAG welding set with wire feeder | Gas metal arc welding on sheet and plate | Machine maker specification | 4 to 6 sets |
| TIG welding set with HF unit | Gas tungsten arc welding on stainless and aluminium | Machine maker specification | 3 to 4 sets |
| Oxy acetylene gas welding and cutting outfit | Gas welding, brazing, manual cutting | The relevant IS code for regulators and hoses | 6 to 8 outfits |
| Personal protective set: welding helmet, leather apron, gauntlets, spats, safety shoes | Trade safety compliance | The relevant IS code for each PPE item | 60 individual sets |
| Weld inspection kit: fillet gauge, undercut gauge, weld gauge set, chipping hammer, wire brush | Visual weld inspection and defect identification | The relevant IS code for visual inspection | 60 hand tool sets, 10 gauge sets |
| Fume extraction, either booth level or centralised | Workshop ventilation compliance | Factory and workshop safety requirements | Sized to booth count |
Welding is the trade where inspectors look hardest at services rather than machines. Booth separation, screening, earthing, extraction and cylinder storage are part of the fit-out, and they carry real cost. Budget them as line items, not as site work to be sorted later.
Electrician
| Equipment | What it demonstrates | Standard or method where confident | Qty for a 60-student batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wiring practice panel or cubicle with conduit, casing and capping | Domestic and industrial wiring layouts | The relevant IS wiring code of practice | 20 to 30 panels |
| DC and AC machine set: shunt and series motors, alternator, synchronous machine | Starting, speed control, load characteristics | The relevant IS code for rotating machines | 1 to 2 of each type |
| Transformer trainer, single phase and three phase | Turns ratio, OC and SC tests, connections | The relevant IS code for transformer testing | 2 to 3 units |
| Starter and control panel set: DOL, star delta, auto transformer, reversing | Motor control wiring and fault finding | Manufacturer wiring diagrams | 10 to 12 sets |

| Electrician hand tool kit with insulated tools | Termination, jointing, crimping | The relevant IS code for insulated hand tools | 60 individual kits |
| PLC trainer with I O simulator | Ladder logic, timers, counters, motor sequencing | Controller documentation | 4 to 6 stations |
If your institute also runs degree programmes, the machines room can be shared with the electrical engineering lab schedule, but do not assume the reverse. Degree lab bench sets are usually too few in number and too delicate for ITI wiring practice.
Wireman
| Equipment | What it demonstrates | Standard or method where confident | Qty for a 60-student batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wiring boards for surface, concealed and industrial wiring | Circuit layout, load distribution, switching schemes | The relevant IS wiring code of practice | 30 boards |

| Microcontroller and embedded trainer with programmer | Programming, interfacing, sensor input | Controller documentation | 15 stations |
| Consumer electronics working models with fault insertion | Systematic fault diagnosis on live equipment | Trainer documentation | 6 to 10 models |
Fault insertion is the feature worth paying for in this trade. A trainer that only builds circuits teaches assembly. A trainer with switchable faults teaches diagnosis, which is what the trainee is actually hired to do.
Mechanic Motor Vehicle

|---|---|---|---|
| Cut section models of petrol and diesel engines | Four stroke cycle, valve timing, component layout | Model documentation | 2 to 4 models |

| Moisture meter and timber sample set | Species identification, seasoning and defects | The relevant IS code for timber grading | 2 meters, 1 sample set |
The shared layer every trade workshop depends on
Roughly a fifth of a realistic ITI fit-out sits outside the trade tables. It is easy to leave out and expensive to retrofit.
| Item | Why it belongs in the BOQ | Notes | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tool crib with issue register and shadow boards | Per-head tool issue is unmanageable without it | One per trade workshop | Cabinets, racks, registers |
| Compressed air line with receiver and drops | Serves MMV, RAC, welding and painting practice | Size for simultaneous users | Compressor plus piping |
| Electrical distribution, earthing and residual current protection | Machine loads, safety and inspection compliance | The relevant IS wiring code of practice | Panel, cabling, earth pits |
| Fume and dust extraction | Welding, carpentry and grinding areas | Local extraction beats general ventilation | Sized per workshop |
| Fire extinguishers, first aid, eye wash, sand bucket | Statutory and inspection critical | The relevant IS code per appliance type | All workshops |
| Consumable float: electrodes, gases, timber, MS bar, cable, fasteners | Practicals stop without it | Budget per term, per trade | Recurring line item |
Turning the trade lists into a defensible purchase file
Work in this order. First, download the current DGT syllabus and equipment schedule for every trade you are applying for, and freeze it as the source document. Second, build one worksheet per trade with the columns above plus specification, quantity, unit and remarks. Third, split the total into capital equipment, per-head tools and consumables, because these three buckets have different approval routes and different replacement cycles.
For government institutes, most of this eventually flows through a portal listing or a tender. The mechanics are the same ones covered in the GeM lab equipment procurement guide and the lab equipment tender documents checklist. Write specifications that are performance based and verifiable, avoid brand-locked wording, and state acceptance criteria for installation and demonstration.
Phase the money if the first year budget is tight. Year one buys the benches, hand tools, measuring instruments and the minimum machine count that lets the syllabus run. Year two adds the second machine tier and the trainers that improve placement outcomes. The sequencing logic in the first procurement guide for a new institute and the planning method in the lab equipment cost and budget guide transfers directly to an ITI, with the quantity emphasis inverted toward hand tools.
If your campus also runs degree or diploma streams, map the overlaps early. Shared floors between an ITI Fitter workshop and a mechanical engineering lab can work for materials testing exposure, where IS 1608 and ISO 6892-1 govern tensile testing, ASTM E10 and ASTM E18 cover Brinell and Rockwell hardness, ASTM E92 covers Vickers, and IS 1757 with ASTM E23 covers Charpy impact. Multi-stream campuses running health science programmes will separately be planning against nursing lab equipment and pharmacy lab equipment schedules, and those councils publish their own current requirements. Check the live handbook in every case rather than trusting a summary.
Where Scientico fits in an ITI fit-out
Scientico Industries has manufactured laboratory and engineering teaching equipment from its own works in Ambala, Haryana since 1993, and supplies institutes and distributors in more than 60 countries. The company is ISO 9001:2015 certified, with CE conformity documentation available on applicable models. Scientico is a manufacturer, not an ISO/IEC 17025 or NABL accredited testing laboratory.
The range covers 331 products across 19 categories, including trainer units, machine and workshop teaching equipment, and instrument sets suited to vocational workshops. Product families include FluidoSurge and FluidoSurgeX, FortiTestX, FrixoDynamics, ThermoFlux, ProDynami, ProZessix, HydraNexis, RVX, PolarX, OperatiX, VibranoX and Solidra. Browse the engineering training equipment category to see the trainer families, and the nursing lab equipment and pharmacy lab equipment categories if your campus runs those streams.
Supply is quote based, with no public price list, because trade-wise quantities and specifications vary too much for a catalogue price to mean anything. Export orders ship CIF or FOB from Nhava Sheva or Mundra. Technical documents are available on the downloads page, certification records on the quality certifications page, and institutes outside India can check the distributor locator. Government and institutional buyers running OEM or private label programmes can use the OEM manufacturing and export enquiries route.

One honest ask
We don't gate anything on this site. You just read the whole thing free. If it was useful, leave your email and two things happen: we send you this page as a plain-text block you can paste into a tender file or an internal email, and we notify you the next time we publish a buyer tool like this one. Nothing else. No drip sequence, no sales calls booked without asking.
