- Measure the indentation. After removing the force, the mean diameter d of the residual indent is measured in two perpendicular directions using a calibrated optical system or an integrated CCD reader. The two readings must not disagree by more than the tolerance in the standard.
- Calculate and report. HBW is calculated from the formula above, or read from the IS 1500 Part 4 tables. The result is written in the standard form, for example 250 HBW 10/3000/15, giving the value, indenter, force, and dwell time.
- Verify the machine. Direct verification of force, indenter, and measuring system plus indirect verification against certified reference blocks are performed at the intervals specified in IS 1500 Part 2, with reference blocks calibrated in accordance with Part 3.
