Pharmacy Tablet Testing Equipment Selection Guide

Hardness, friability, disintegration and dissolution are different tablet-testing decisions. They investigate different quality attributes and require different apparatus, procedures and result records. A pharmacy laboratory should begin with the dosage form, teaching objective and applicable method, then specify apparatus configuration, operating controls, accessories and qualification expectations.

Which tablet-testing instrument answers which question?

Test Primary question What the RFQ must define
Tablet hardness testing What force is required to break or crush the tablet under the stated test arrangement? Force range and units, loading method, tablet dimensions, display/resolution, fixtures and result recording.
Friability testing How well do tablets resist abrasion and chipping under the stated tumbling procedure? Drum arrangement, rotation control, timer/counter, loading and result workflow.
Disintegration testing How long does the dosage form take to disintegrate under the specified conditions? Basket-rack configuration, bath temperature control, stroke/dip conditions, timing, discs and dosage-form suitability.
Dissolution testing How is drug release assessed using the required apparatus, medium, speed, temperature and sampling procedure? Apparatus type, vessel/station count, agitation control, temperature, sampling, accessories, calibration/qualification and data requirements.

Why apparatus and method must be stated together

USP guidance for dissolution Apparatus 1 and 2 separates mechanical qualification from performance verification and treats the whole assembly as part of reliable testing. Its supporting-information guidance asks for apparatus type, agitation rate, temperature, specialised accessories, sampling times and tolerances. See the official USP dissolution qualification guideline and USP supporting-information guidance.

That does not mean every educational instrument is automatically suitable for compendial testing. The buyer must state whether the requirement is for teaching/demonstration, method development or regulated quality-control work, and the supplier must document the offered scope accordingly.

Procurement checklist

  1. State the dosage form and the educational or analytical purpose.
  2. Name the relevant method, monograph or teaching protocol.
  3. Specify apparatus type and number of test positions.
  4. Define speed, temperature, force, time and other controlled quantities.
  5. List vessels, baskets, paddles, discs, drums, fixtures, probes and sampling accessories.
  6. Describe calibration, mechanical qualification or performance-verification expectations.
  7. State software, audit-trail or data-export needs only where required.
  8. Separate included consumables and reference items from buyer-supplied items.
  9. Confirm electrical supply, documentation, installation, training, warranty and destination.

How distributors should answer a pharmacy-equipment BOQ

Keep each test as a separate line item. Identify the proposed model, supported apparatus/method, stations, controlled parameters, included accessories, qualification documents and deviations. Avoid a single “tablet testing kit” price unless its component-level scope is listed, because a bundled label hides whether the laboratory can perform each required procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Does tablet hardness predict dissolution by itself?

No. Hardness and dissolution address different questions. Formulation, porosity, disintegration and test conditions also affect release behaviour.

Is a teaching dissolution apparatus automatically qualified for QC use?

No. State the intended use and required qualification evidence. The offered apparatus and documentation must be evaluated against the applicable laboratory method.

Should a buyer combine all tablet tests into one tender line?

Separate line items make apparatus, controlled parameters, accessories and deviations easier to compare and accept.
