NBA Accreditation and Laboratory Requirements
The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) evaluates engineering programmes under Criterion 3 (Programme Outcomes and Course Outcomes) and Criterion 5 (Student Performance). However, lab infrastructure is assessed under Criterion 3 — Technical Competence and the overall self-assessment report (SAR). This guide covers the specific lab documentation NBA requires and how to prepare it.
NBA Tier System: What Applies to Your College
- Tier 1 Institutes (IITs, NITs, IISc): NBA-accredited under a separate framework with higher benchmarks.
- Tier 2 Institutes (other AICTE-approved colleges): Accredited under the standard NBA framework. Most private and state engineering colleges fall here.
NBA Criterion 3 — Laboratory Infrastructure Requirements
NBA evaluates labs under “Facilities and Technical Support” in the SAR. Key requirements:
3.1 Number of Labs
Each department must have dedicated labs for all core subjects. For mechanical engineering, this means separate labs for: fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, strength of materials, theory of machines, manufacturing science, and metrology.
3.2 Student-to-Equipment Ratio
NBA specifies that labs must support practical batch sizes of 20–30 students with adequate setups. Recommended: 1 experiment setup per 2 students in a batch. For a 30-student batch, you need at least 15 setups of each experiment type.
3.3 Equipment Specifications
- All measuring instruments must have current calibration certificates (within 12 months).
- Equipment should be in working condition — non-functional equipment must be repaired or replaced before inspection.
- Lab equipment should be tagged with asset numbers matching the inventory list.
Documents Required for NBA Lab Inspection
| Document | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Equipment inventory list | Equipment name, make, model, capacity, quantity, cost, year of purchase |
| Purchase invoices/GRN | Proof of procurement and financial value |
| Manufacturer ISO 9001:2015 certificate | Quality assurance from the supplier |
| CE certificate (for each equipment) | Safety and performance compliance |
| Calibration certificates | Validity within 12 months of inspection date |
| Equipment utilisation log | Signed batch records showing student usage per semester |
| Experiment manuals | Aligned to university syllabus; aim, theory, procedure, observation, calculations |
| Maintenance register | Scheduled and corrective maintenance records |
Preparing the SAR Laboratory Section
The SAR (Self Assessment Report) lab section should include:
- Lab name and associated courses: Map each lab to the course code it supports.
- Floor area: Area in m² (minimum standards vary by AICTE norms — typically 66 m² for a lab with 30 students).
- Equipment list: Full inventory with specifications and quantities.
- Photographs: Recent photographs of lab interior, equipment, and student practical work.
- Utilisation data: Number of batches per semester, hours utilised per week.
- Deficiencies and action plan: If any equipment is missing or non-functional, list the procurement/repair plan.
