LABORATORY PLANNING GUIDE

Plan an OSCE and clinical-skills laboratory by stations, throughput and assessment flow

An OSCE laboratory succeeds or fails on logistics: how many stations run at once, how candidates rotate, where consumables come from, how rooms are cleaned between candidates, and how assessors observe without disrupting the next learner. This planning guide is a template for those decisions. It deliberately does not define clinical technique – your curriculum, regulator and clinical educators own that.

Planning summaryDefine the station list from your assessed competencies, size each station for the cohort and timetable, plan consumables and turnover, and then request equipment against the station schedule. Scientico supplies the physical teaching stations; clinical-method decisions remain with your faculty.

Station planning: competency to station to equipment

Generic planning template – replace the competency column with your own curriculum. Not a clinical protocol.
Station type (template) Planning questions Physical needs to specify
Bedside procedural practice Learners per station, privacy, observer position Bed or couch, manikin or task trainer per your curriculum, trolley, screen
Examination and assessment technique Which competencies, paired practice or solo Examination furniture, lighting, model set per curriculum choice
Aseptic and infection-control practice Consumable turnover, cleaning cycle between candidates Trolleys, waste routing, hand-hygiene station, washable surfaces
Resuscitation and emergency response Group size, debrief space, equipment checks Training manikin level per your programme, floor space for team work
Communication and history-taking Room layout, recording or observation policy Two chairs and table, optional observation boundary

The competency column must come from your curriculum and be reviewed by your clinical educators; equipment vendors cannot define it. What a supplier must state is the physical specification of each station.

Throughput: size the room from the timetable, not the brochure

Cohort and rotation

Candidates per OSCE circuit, minutes per station, and rotations per session give the stations-per-hour figure that sizes duplicate stations.

Peak-week test

Size for examination week, not the average teaching week: the room must run the full circuit with exam-level turnover when it matters.

Duplicate stations

Where the timetable runs two groups simultaneously, duplicate the constrained station rather than shortening practice time.

Consumables and turnover between candidates

Plan the replacement flow for anything consumed or contaminated per candidate: linens, dressings, disposables per your curriculum, cleaning agents, and the minutes your timetable allows for reset. Ask suppliers to separate reusable equipment from replacement supplies in the quotation so annual operating cost is visible.

Rooms, storage and assessment flow

Plan storage between sessions (locked for assessment stock), a clean and dirty flow between stations, assessor observation positions, and a debrief area. Confirm electrical and water points per station against the equipment list before the room is built – retrofitting services costs more than planning them.
