Pharmacy Lab Equipment for PCI Inspection: B.Pharm Accreditation Checklist and Setup Guide

Pharmacy Lab Equipment for PCI Inspection: B.Pharm Accreditation Checklist and Setup Guide

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) mandates minimum standards for laboratory facilities in B.Pharm and Pharm.D programmes under the Pharmacy Practice Regulations. An institution’s affiliation and continuation of recognition depend on satisfying PCI inspection requirements across multiple lab types. This guide covers the minimum equipment, space, and documentation requirements for each compulsory pharmacy lab so your institution is inspection-ready.

Tablet Hardness Tester Manufacturer India

Tablet Hardness Tester Manufacturer India

The Tablet Hardness Tester measures the crushing strength (diametrical compression force) of pharmaceutical tablets, a critical quality control parameter in tablet manufacturing and pharmacy education. It is a standard instrument in pharmacy lab equipment lists prescribed by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for B.Pharm, M.Pharm, and D.Pharm programmes.

PCI-Mandated Pharmacy Labs and Equipment Requirements

PCI regulations require the following labs for a B.Pharm programme. Each must have dedicated equipment in working order at the time of inspection:

LabMinimum Equipment RequiredSpace (sq.m, per batch)
Pharmaceutics LabTablet compression machine, dissolution apparatus, disintegration tester, hardness tester, friability tester, capsule filling machine, autoclave, pH meter, melting point apparatus, ointment filling machine80–120
Pharmaceutical Chemistry LabRotary evaporator, UV-visible spectrophotometer, reflux apparatus, fractional distillation setup, vacuum pump, hot air oven, muffle furnace, magnetic stirrer with hot plate80–120
Pharmacognosy LabSoxhlet extraction apparatus, steam distillation unit, microscopes (compound + binocular), botanical reference samples, TLC plates and UV lamp, crude drug specimens60–80
Pharmacology LabIsolated organ bath (student pattern), organ holder assembly, kymograph (electronic or mechanical), student physiograph, glucometer, spectrophotometer, animal restraining cages (if animal experiments included)60–80
Microbiology and Biotechnology LabLaminar airflow cabinet, autoclave (vertical), hot air oven, incubator, BOD incubator, colony counter, micropipettes, centrifuge, UV cabinet, anaerobic jar60–80

Dissolution Apparatus, PCI’s Most Scrutinised Equipment

The dissolution apparatus (USP types I and II) is consistently the most scrutinised piece of equipment during PCI lab inspections. PCI requires: a minimum 8-vessel dissolution tester for standard batches, temperature control to ±0.5°C, variable RPM (25–200 RPM), and a current calibration certificate. The apparatus must be capable of running USP apparatus 1 (basket method) and apparatus 2 (paddle method), dual-function capability is now the standard for PCI-recognised institutions. See our dissolution apparatus experiment procedure guide for the standard experiment protocol. View the full dissolution apparatus specifications from Scientico India.

Documentation Required for PCI Inspection

  1. Equipment inventory register, complete list of all equipment in each lab with manufacturer, model, purchase date, and condition status
  2. Calibration certificates, for analytical instruments (spectrophotometers, pH meters, balances, dissolution apparatus), must be current (within 12 months)
  3. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), for all major experiments, signed by lab in-charge
  4. Chemical and reagent stock register, current stock of chemicals, expiry dates, storage conditions
  5. Safety compliance, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, chemical disposal records

Procurement Strategy for PCI-Compliant Pharmacy Labs

Institutions setting up new pharmacy labs or upgrading for PCI re-inspection should procure as a single complete lab bundle, not item by item. A single supplier for the full pharmaceutics lab equipment (dissolution, disintegration, hardness, friability, tablet compression) provides consistent documentation, matched calibration timelines, and a single point of contact for warranty and service. Scientico India supplies model-specific pharmacy lab equipment with full PCI documentation, equipment register entries, calibration certificates, and SOPs, as part of the standard delivery package. For export to institutions outside India, we provide HS codes and CE Declaration of Conformity. See our lab equipment export page and our FAQ page for shipping, payment, and warranty terms.

Pharmacy laboratory buying path

Turn the PCI checklist into a model-level BOQ

A useful pharmacy-lab schedule states the practical or test, student capacity, quantity, measurement range, included accessories, utility needs and evidence required at inspection. Generic product names should be resolved before the quotation is approved.

  1. Separate teaching, testing, process and safety requirements.
  2. Add quantity and student-batch assumptions to every line.
  3. Open the published pharmacy equipment and tablet hardness tester records.
  4. Send ambiguous lines for model and supplied-scope clarification.

Separate the inspection list from the equipment specification

An inspection checklist tells the institution what must be demonstrated or evidenced; it does not automatically define the configuration of each instrument. Convert every generic line into the intended practical, dosage form or measurement. Add the number of learners, frequency of use and whether the item supports teaching, preparation, testing or process demonstration. This stops the same product name from producing quotations for different jobs.

Build evidence around the offered model

For each accepted model, keep the reviewed datasheet, operating instructions, serial or asset record, installation or commissioning record where applicable, and the institution’s own practical or standard operating procedure. If calibration or verification evidence is required, state the measurement and interval rather than asking for an undefined certificate. The document description should match the supplied configuration and accessories.

Check the full station before comparing price

A tablet or formulation practical may need preparation tools, measuring items, vessels, consumables, cleaning provisions and safe storage beyond the named apparatus. Record what the laboratory already owns, what the supplier includes and what the institution must source locally. Compare bidders against that full station boundary, then record deviations and optional items beside the corresponding BOQ line.
