During operation, a suspension, typically water mixed with diatomite, is maintained in a homogeneous state by a mechanical stirrer. The suspension is pumped into the plate and frame filter press or microfilter housing. In the filter press, solids are retained on filter cloths mounted on grooved plates, forming a filter cake, while the clarified filtrate passes through internal channels into a collection tank. In tangential filtration, solids are separated at the membrane surface and the microfilter is periodically cleaned once the maximum pressure drop is reached.
