Engineering Workshop and Manufacturing Lab Equipment: Complete Guide for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering

Engineering Workshop and Manufacturing Lab Equipment: Complete Guide for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering

The Engineering Workshop (also called the Manufacturing Processes Lab or Mechanical Workshop) is a mandatory facility for every B.Tech Mechanical Engineering programme under AICTE norms. It is often the largest and most capital-intensive lab in the department, ahead even of the Fluid Mechanics or SOM lab, because it requires both heavy machinery (lathe, milling machine, drilling machine) and consumable-intensive operations (welding, fitting). This guide covers what every B.Tech workshop needs, the space and utility requirements, and how to procure it systematically.

AICTE-Required Workshop Sections

AICTE model curriculum divides the Engineering Workshop into distinct sections. Each section requires dedicated equipment:

Workshop SectionEquipment RequiredSpace (sq.m)
Fitting SectionWorkbenches with vices (1 per 2 students), hacksaw frames, files (flat, round, triangular, half-round), chisels, hammers, surface plate, try square, vernier calliper, scribing tool, centre punch40–60
Carpentry SectionWoodworking bench, chisels (wood), mallet, planes (jack, smoothing), tenon saw, marking gauge, mortise gauge, try square, spirit level30–40
Welding SectionArc welding machine (6–8 stations), oxy-acetylene welding equipment (2–3 stations), welding tables, welding curtains, safety equipment (gloves, face shields, aprons), fume extraction40–60
Smithy / Forging SectionCoal forge (2–3 units), swage block, anvil, hammers (ball-peen, cross-peen), tongs, hardies, punches, fire tools30–40
Foundry SectionMuffle furnace (for aluminum casting), moulding boxes, moulding sand, rammers, sprue cutters, trowels, bellows30–40
Machine Shop SectionCentre lathe (4–6 units), drilling machine (pillar type, 4–6 units), shaping machine (1–2 units), milling machine (1–2 units)80–120

Machine Shop Equipment, Key Specifications

The Machine Shop is the most expensive workshop section. Key specifications for the primary machine tools:

  • Centre Lathe, 1.5m bed length minimum, 300mm swing over bed, 3-jaw and 4-jaw chuck, steady rest and follower rest, compound slide, tool post. Motor: 1.5–2 kW. For a 30-student batch, minimum 6 lathes are required (maximum 5 students per machine under AICTE norms).
  • Pillar Drilling Machine, 40mm maximum drilling capacity, variable speed (speeds: 4–6 positions, 200–1800 RPM range), 600mm table height. 6 machines for 30 students.
  • Milling Machine (Horizontal and Vertical), table travel: 600 x 200 x 300mm (X x Y x Z), variable spindle speed. 1–2 units for demonstration and guided practice.
  • Shaping Machine, 250mm stroke minimum, 250 x 200mm ram stroke x table travel. 1–2 units.

Safety and Utility Requirements

The workshop has the highest safety requirements of any engineering lab. AICTE norms require: separate electrical panels with individual MCBs for each machine, earthing for all machines to IS 3043, fire extinguisher (Class B/C for welding section, Class A/B for general), eye wash station, first aid kit, safety shoes and goggles for all students during machine operations, and a designated tool storage area with issued-and-return system.

One honest ask

We don't gate anything on this site. You just read the whole thing free. If it was useful, leave your email and two things happen: we send you this page as a plain-text block you can paste into a tender file or an internal email, and we notify you the next time we publish a buyer tool like this one. Nothing else. No drip sequence, no sales calls booked without asking.
