Definitions
The flash point is the lowest temperature at which the oil gives off enough vapour to form a momentary flash (a brief ignition) when a test flame is brought near — but the flame does not sustain. The fire point is the lowest temperature at which the vapours ignite and continue to burn for at least five seconds. The fire point is usually 5–40°C above the flash point.
Apparatus required
- Pensky–Martens closed-cup apparatus (for fuels and medium-flash oils)
- Cleveland open-cup apparatus (for high-flash lubricating oils)
- Test flame, thermometer, heating arrangement and stirrer
A closed cup gives a slightly lower flash point than an open cup because vapours are retained; the method is chosen to match the product specification.
Procedure
- Fill the cup with the oil sample up to the index mark.
- Heat the oil at a slow, steady rate while stirring gently.
- At regular temperature intervals, apply the test flame briefly over the surface.
- Record the temperature at which a distinct flash first appears — this is the flash point.
- Continue heating and applying the flame until the vapours burn continuously for five seconds — this is the fire point.
Significance
Flash point determines the fire hazard of storing and handling a liquid: products are classed as flammable or combustible based on it. A lower-than-expected flash point in a used lubricating oil signals contamination by fuel dilution, making this a key condition-monitoring test.

Flash and fire point testing is applied to petrol, diesel, kerosene, transformer oil, lubricating oils, and solvents.
