How to choose the weir or notch for the experiment

The experiment should be selected around the head range and discharge relationship students must observe. A rectangular notch is useful for a direct width-and-head relationship; a V-notch increases sensitivity at lower flows; a trapezoidal arrangement introduces an additional geometry term. The laboratory worksheet should state which dimensions are measured and which coefficient is being determined rather than treating all notches as interchangeable.

What to confirm before requesting a quotation

  • Record where head is measured and how the hook or point gauge is read.
  • State the water-supply, stilling and return arrangement.

Observation sequence and result checks

Level the apparatus and establish a steady approach flow before recording the zero reference. Fit one notch plate securely, allow the upstream level to stabilise, and measure head at the designated gauge position rather than immediately beside the crest. Increase the flow through several stable points that cover the intended range. At each point, record head, collected volume or mass, collection time and water temperature if the laboratory method requires it. Repeat the sequence for each notch without changing the head reference method.

Calculate experimental discharge from the collection measurement and theoretical discharge from the equation specified for the notch geometry. The coefficient of discharge is obtained from their ratio. Plotting discharge against head helps reveal whether a single reading is inconsistent. A drifting upstream level, a leaking plate, an incorrect crest dimension, air entrainment, an unsteady collection time or parallax at the gauge can all produce a plausible-looking but unreliable coefficient.

Acceptance check for a new apparatus

Before accepting the unit, verify that every quoted notch plate is present and identifiable, the crest edges are undamaged, the plate seals correctly, the gauge travels smoothly, the scale can be read over the required head range and the water circuit reaches stable flows without leakage. Ask the supplier to demonstrate one complete reading set and provide the dimensions used in the laboratory calculation. The acceptance record should name the supplied bench or water source, connectors, stilling arrangement, gauge, collection method and experiment manual so that missing shared equipment is not discovered after installation.

Record the test date, operator and apparatus identification with the observation sheet so later classes can compare results against the same setup.
