From readings to a defensible Pelton-wheel result

A useful Pelton-wheel practical links inlet head and flow to runner speed, torque and output. Students should record the operating point before changing the load, keep the measurement method consistent and repeat enough points to show a performance trend. The calculation sheet should distinguish hydraulic input from measured shaft output so that efficiency is not inferred from speed alone.

What to confirm before requesting a quotation

  • List nozzle, spear, brake or dynamometer, instruments and guards in the supplied scope.

Test sequence, calculations and acceptance evidence

Begin with the runner unloaded and confirm that the water circuit, nozzle and guarding are secure. Establish a steady inlet condition, then record head, flow, rotational speed and the zero-load torque or brake reading. Apply load in controlled steps while keeping the nozzle setting or operating condition stated in the worksheet. Allow each point to stabilise before reading. Continue through the useful operating range, then reduce the load and repeat selected points to identify inconsistent readings or excessive hysteresis.

Hydraulic input power is based on density, gravity, discharge and net head at the turbine. Shaft output requires measured torque and angular speed; electrical output is not a substitute unless the experiment specifically includes a characterised generator and the conversion losses are addressed. Calculate efficiency from the defined input and output at each operating point, then plot torque, power and efficiency against speed or load. The highest speed is not automatically the best operating point: the purpose is to identify the relationship between jet conditions, runner speed, load and useful output.

Sources of error to discuss with students

Unsteady head or flow, nozzle misalignment, brake friction, an incorrect effective brake radius, speed fluctuation, temperature-dependent water properties and reading instruments before stabilisation can distort the curves. The worksheet should show which head is used, where it is measured and how torque is derived. Repeat readings are valuable because a smooth curve drawn through a single run can hide a systematic error.

Commissioning check for the supplied rig

Confirm the runner and nozzle identification, usable speed and load range, head and flow indication, torque method, pump and reservoir arrangement, electrical protection, guards, drainage, manual and included tools. Demonstrate a stable operating point and one complete power calculation during acceptance. If software or data acquisition is offered, list it separately with its sensors, licence, computer requirements and manual-reading fallback.
