A useful unit operations laboratory is a connected set of experiments, not a collection of similarly named machines. Procurement should begin with the separation, transfer or processing principle students must observe and end with a comparable schedule of equipment, measurements, utilities and included accessories.
Choose the process before the catalogue model
Distillation, absorption, adsorption, extraction, crystallisation and fluidisation each need a different process path. Even within one operation, a bench demonstration and an instrumented teaching unit may support different calculations. A clear selection brief states the material system, operating mode, measurable variables and expected student output before a brand or model is considered.
Six points to settle before requesting quotations
- Operation and experiment: name the process and the balance, efficiency or transfer calculation required by the course.
- Process arrangement: define column, vessel, packing, tray, contact stage, feed, recycle and collection needs where applicable.
- Operating mode and capacity: distinguish batch, continuous and demonstration use without assuming differently sized units are equivalent.
- Instrumentation: list temperatures, pressures, flows, levels, samples and composition measurements the learner must record.
- Services: document heating, cooling, water, vacuum, drainage, ventilation and electrical requirements available in the room.
- Complete scope: require reusable accessories, initial consumables, manuals, experiment procedures and exclusions to be itemised.

What a comparable supplier response should show
