Strength of Materials Lab Setup Guide: Equipment List and Specifications for B.Tech Mechanical Engineering
The Strength of Materials (SOM) and Materials Testing laboratory is where engineering students make their first direct contact with the mechanical properties of real materials. It is also one of the three labs most scrutinised by NBA peer teams — alongside the Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics labs — because it demonstrates core programme outcomes around experimentation, analysis, and modern tool use. Getting this lab right from the start, both in equipment selection and documentation, prevents expensive repeat procurement and failed inspections.
Complete Equipment List for a B.Tech SOM Lab
| Apparatus | Primary Experiments | Recommended Qty (30 students) |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Testing Machine (50–100 kN) | Tensile test, compression test, bending, shear, hardness correlation | 1–2 |
| Rockwell / Brinell Hardness Tester | Hardness measurement and inter-conversion (HRB, HRC, HB, HV) | 1–2 |
| Vickers Hardness Tester | Micro-hardness, heat-treated material characterisation | 1 |
| Izod and Charpy Impact Testing Machine | Notch toughness, energy absorbed vs. temperature | 1 |
| Torsion Testing Machine | Shear modulus, torsional strength, angle of twist | 1 |
| Spring Testing Machine | Spring stiffness, close-coiled and open-coiled spring comparison, Wahl factor | 2–3 |
| Fatigue Testing Machine | S-N curve, endurance limit, fatigue life estimation | 1 |
| Creep Testing Machine | Creep strain vs. time at elevated temperature | 1 |
| Deflection of Beams Apparatus | Simply supported and cantilever beam deflection, Young’s modulus | 3–4 |
| Columns and Struts Apparatus | Buckling load, Euler’s formula, effective length | 2–3 |
NBA Quantity Requirements
NBA criteria specify that no experiment station is shared by more than 5 students simultaneously. For a 30-student batch: the UTM is typically a demonstration experiment (1–2 units sufficient since tests run sequentially), the hardness tester requires 3–4 units for parallel operation, and beam deflection apparatus requires 6 units for simultaneous station operation. The Strength of Materials equipment list covers the exact quantities specified in the AICTE model curriculum. Also review our Universal Testing Machine buyer’s guide for UTM-specific specification decisions.
Calibration Requirements
The following SOM lab instruments require calibration from a NABL-accredited calibration laboratory, with certificates available at the time of NBA inspection:
- Universal Testing Machine — annual calibration per IS 1828 / ISO 7500-1. Must show calibration at all load ranges used in the lab programme.
- Hardness Testers (Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers) — annual verification against certified reference test blocks. Reference blocks traceable to NIST or NABL standard.
- Impact Testing Machine — annual verification of potential energy at full swing using certified calibration block or direct measurement.
- Torsion Testing Machine — annual calibration of torque measurement against NABL-certified torque standard.
Budget for a Complete SOM Lab
A complete Strength of Materials lab for a 30-student batch, meeting NBA experiment requirements and including all calibration certificates and documentation, typically costs USD 30,000–55,000 CIF. See our engineering lab equipment cost guide for a full budget methodology. Scientico India’s engineering training equipment range covers all SOM lab apparatus with CE certification and NABL-traceable calibration.
